The desire to see new developments in use is typical of biomedical engineers. They develop new devices, processes, and systems for a variety of reasons—to improve healthcare, advance biology and medicine, and to acquire new knowledge about living systems. The field of biomedical engineering is multidisciplinary and brings together engineering, biology, and medicine. Many, but not all, biomedical engineers have an undergraduate degree in engineering, although some have an undergraduate degree in the sciences. Most often they have graduate degrees and work in medical research and design in industry, in government, or in academic settings.
