The Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) has received the report from its third International Board of Review (IBR). Legislated in the AHFMR's formative Act, an IBR is convened every six years and is made up of esteemed scientists who, as a group, have the wide range of expertise needed to review the broad spectrum of AHFMR activities. Candidates for the IBR were recommended in consultation with the Alberta scientific community, and AHFMR's senior scientific and health advisory committees. This year, the seven-person-IBR was headed by Dr. Henry Dinsdale, Professor Emeritus, Department of Medicine and Neurology, Queen's University.
The goal of an IBR is to review the operations of the Foundation and comment on the impact and effectiveness of present programs in achieving its objectives and goals. The IBR members may also recommend, if required, modifications to existing programs or consideration of new programs to achieve these same objectives. The IBR spent the week of October 5 - 9 in Edmonton and Calgary meeting with the Foundation and with a large number of individuals and groups from the universities, government, and health research community at large. The information gathered at these meetings, integrated with the expert opinions of the IBR members, constitute the IBR Report. In early December, Dr. Dinsdale presented the IBR Report to AHFMR's Board of Trustees. This website version of the Report is the IBR's document as received by the Trustees. The Trustees will use the Report and its recommendations to inform future Foundation planning; their ongoing deliberations will also be informed through continuing formal and informal consultation with the research community and other stakeholders. One way to get input is by posting the IBR Report on AHFMR's website along with a response form. We invite you to read the Report and send us your ideas, comments and reactions.
