New Manager for SEARCH program - AHFMR Magazine Winter 2000

Ms. Sarah Hayward

Sarah Hayward, AHFMR's new Manager of SEARCH (Swift, Efficient Application of Research in Community Health), brings a wealth of experience in community health to her position.

Ms. Hayward was the co-founder and for three years the Vice-President of a health information company developing and implementing knowledge management solutions for health care over the Internet. Before that, she spent five years as a clinical nurse consultant with a teaching health unit affiliated with McMaster University. In that position, she combined research, education, and practice. She acted as a coordinator and then consultant on a Public Health Effectiveness Project. Ms. Hayward has also conducted systematic reviews of the effects of public health interventions, worked as a staff nurse and later manager of a parent--child program, and has participated on regional and provincial advisory committees to develop guidelines for public health practice.

With SEARCH II nearing completion, 45 participants across Alberta have undertaken six-week residential training sessions, and developed and conducted individual and collaborative research projects. With the success of SEARCH I and II and continued demand from health regions for increasing research expertise, AHFMR has committed to a third phase of the program. Ms. Hayward will work closely in the coming months with university faculty members, the regional health authorities, and other partners to develop a SEARCH III program.

SEARCH I and II are AHFMR-funded programs organized in collaboration with Alberta Health and Wellness, the regional health authorities, the Alberta Mental Health Board, and with the valuable participation of the universities of Alberta and Calgary.

For more information on SEARCH III, please call 780-423-5727, e-mail Sarah Hayward at shayward@ahfmr.ab.ca

AHFMR IN THE COMMUNITY

$45 million for university building campaign

The Heritage Foundation recently announced major funding to boost health research building campaigns at Alberta's three largest universities.

The one-time-only AHFMR Challenge Offer will contribute $45 million or up to 20%, whichever is less, of the total province-wide costs of building new or renovating existing health research facilities at the Universities of Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge. Part of the Challenge Offer requires the universities to successfully raise the remaining funds from other sources. The Challenge Offer will disburse funds for at least four years.

New AHFMR Board Chair

Prominent Calgary businessman Harley N. Hotchkiss was appointed Chairman of the AHFMR Board of Trustees, effective February 1, 2000. Mr. Hotchkiss succeeds Alvin Libin who, in his ten-year service to AHFMR, guided the Foundation's significant increases in research funding and program expansion.

Mr. Hotchkiss was appointed to the AHFMR Board of Trustees by the Lieutenant- Governor of the Province of Alberta by an Order in Council on March 31, 1999.

Dr. Frank Witkowski

Heritage Scientist Dr. Frank Witkowski passed away suddenly in December 1999. Dr. Witkowski was a respected physician, engineer, member of the Cardiovascular Research Group, and Professor in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Oral Health Sciences at the University of Alberta. A highlight of Dr. Witkowski's career was the development, along with Heritage Researcher Dr. Wayne Giles of the University of Calgary, of unique high-resolution movies depicting what happens when a heart attack triggers ventricular fibrillation.
