Outstanding medical student Karin Dymond was awarded the 1998 Lionel E. McLeod Health Research Scholarship in Calgary on September 8. Dr. McLeod's widow, Barbara, made the presentation to the University of Calgary student.

Karin is a student in the combined MD/MSc joint-degree program in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Her studies in the Department of Community Health Sciences are focused on the economic cost of childhood injury and specific injury prevention strategies, including the use of bicycle helmets. She is examining the cost and effectiveness of using education, subsidy, or legislation to increase public use of such protective devices. This information will be valuable to both parents and policy-makers.

The fifth annual award honours Dr. Lionel E. McLeod, who was the founding President of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, Dean of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Head of Endocrinology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and President and Chief Executive Officer of the University Hospital in Vancouver.

Each year, the award, which contributes up to $23,000 to the recipient's studies, is given to a distinguished student from the Universities of Calgary, Alberta, or British Columbia who shows excellent promise in human health research.
