AHFMR IN THE COMMUNITY

Neuroscience research at Alberta universities received a major gift of $337,500 from the Max Bell Foundation of Calgary. The gift is part of the NeuroScience Canada Foundation's special Alberta Fundraising Initiative to raise $1 million exclusively for Alberta to provide awards, studentships, and fellowships in neuroscience.

All recipients of the donated awards will be selected through the peer review system of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. Visiting Scholars
AHFMR's Health Technology Assessment Unit hosted three visiting scholar/researchers over the past few months. Dr. Martin Buxton returned to England after spending the summer developing a model for evaluating health services research with HTA staff. Dr. Joanne Homik assessed ultrasound bone-density measurement and in September returned to full-time practice as a rheumatologist at the

U of A Hospital. Dr. Maureen Kwankum will be ending her six-month stay in Canada at the end of October when she returns to Cameroun. Dr. Kwankum contributed to a number of HTA research assessments including one on cord-blood transplantation.

Nursing Excellence
U of A's Faculty of Nursing hosted its third annual Awards Night on September 14. Of the many award winners, 19 students and staff were recognized for receiving a number of AHFMR awards and Health Research Awards which AHFMR administers for Alberta Health. Congratulations to all winners for your outstanding work.


Former AHFMR Chair Honoured
Eric Geddes, who was the Chair of AHFMR's Board of Trustees from 1980 to1990 and a former managing partner of Price Waterhouse in Edmonton, is being honoured by the Faculty of Business. The Eric K. Geddes Strategic Management Centre at the U of A is part of the $1 million Stollery Centre expansion that the Business faculty is overseeing.
