Dr. Jacques Magnan Ask Jacques

Q. I know that the Foundation's major programs are aimed at salary support for trainees and investigators. I have visited your web site to obtain more information on the programs and noted that AHFMR also has programs, such as scientific conferences and visiting scientists, related to the transfer of research knowledge. Could you tell me more about these other programs?

A. Trainees and investigators must have the opportunity to showcase their work and that of their local, national and international colleagues. Hence, the Foundation recognizes

  • the global nature of research
  • the benefits of communication
  • that a variety of funding avenues encourages both.

Such communication involves

  • workshops
  • symposia
  • conferences
  • exchanges on individual levels

Conferences and symposia on health research held in Alberta are eligible to receive support from AHFMR. Applications are evaluated on

  • their potential for attracting high-quality scientists to Alberta
  • opportunities offered for trainees to attend the meetings
  • overall benefits to provincial research community of showcasing their activities
The Foundation does not pay for the entire conference. Normally, it contributes to bringing some of the invited speakers to Alberta.

The Visiting Scientist program

  • encourages the exchange of research knowledge and expertise
  • allows institutions to invite scientists from outside Alberta to spend one month to a year here (AHFMR contributes to travel, living and research costs)
  • allows Alberta investigators to spend time in institutions outside the province (AHFMR contributes to travel, living and research costs)
  • facilitates the exchange of expertise and the development of long-term collaborations between scientists

Similar to the Visiting Scientist program, AHFMR contributes institutional grants (Visiting Lecturer and Travel funds) allowing Alberta investigators to present their research findings at conferences held outside the province or to invite lecturers to Alberta to share their knowledge.
