AHFMR Awards at $26.7 MillionThe Foundation's annual personnel awards reached a new high this year with $26.7 million targeted for health research in the province over the next five years. Forty-seven researchers at the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, and the University of Lethbridge have been offered the awards in the form of salary support for three to five years, depending on the award category.The Foundation has granted more than $540 million to health research in the province since 1980.
$1.26 Million Awarded through the Health Research FundSeventeen research projects to be conducted throughout the province have received funding from the Health Research Fund, administered by AHFMR on behalf of Alberta Health. Projects cover a range of mental health and health services research issues including teen health and osteoporosis. NANUC Launched at U of ACongratulations to Heritage researcher Dr. Brian Sykes for realizing a dream that adds immeasurably to the resources of Alberta's research community. Dr. Sykes successfully brought together key players to fund the U of A's new National High Field Nuclear Resonance (NMR) Centre, also known as "NANUC."NANUC's technology makes it possible for scientists working in fields as diverse as the pulp and paper industry and cancer research to see the three-dimensional configuration and interaction of molecules. The funding partners are: AHFMR, Alberta Science and Research Authority, Western Economic Diversification, Alberta Advanced Education and Career Development, the Medical Research Council of Canada, Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, the Alberta Cancer Board, and several of the world's major pharmaceutical companies. Construction of the new NMR site will begin within the year.
Science FairsAHFMR continued to foster future scientists through this year's seven regional science fairs. Each regional winner received a plaque and $500 from the Foundation to go toward their trip to the national science fair held in Timmins, Ontario.
