New Director of Health Technology Assessment - AHFMR Magazine Fall 1999
AHFMR Magazine - Fall 1999

Don Juzwishin

Don Juzwishin, AHFMR's new Director of Health Technology Assessment, brings 20 years of healthcare management experience to his position. Mr. Juzwishin introduced one of Canada's first applied health technology assessment processes in a complex, multi-hospital environment.

Health technology assessment (HTA) is the systematic evaluation of the properties, effects, and other impacts of healthcare technology. Its primary purpose is to provide objective information to support healthcare decisions and policy-making at the local, regional, national, and international levels. The AHFMR's HTA program, established in 1995, began under the Health Research Collaboration Agreement between AHFMR and Alberta Health.

The core staff members of the HTA Unit, assisted by researchers on short-term placements, undertake assessments in response to requests from organizations and individuals. They often collaborate with other health technology assessment agencies, health authorities and with researchers at universities.

The HTA Unit maintains working relationships with the Institute for Health Economics, the Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment (CCOHTA) and other agencies in Canada and elsewhere. AHFMR is a member of the International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA).

The HTA Unit welcomes requests for information from policy- and decision-makers in Alberta.
