Information about AHFMR Lougheed and Klein Prizes

AHFMR Lougheed Post-doctoral Fellowship Opportunity

Earlier this year, we awarded our inaugural AHFMR Lougheed Prize in biomedical or clinical research, named after former Premier Peter Lougheed whose government founded AHFMR. The 2008 AHFMR Lougheed winner was neuroscientist Dr. Michael Meaney from McGill University. As part of the Prize, AHFMR has agreed to provide funding for a post-doctoral fellowship in the Meaney laboratory in Montreal for up to three years, at a stipend value of $50,000 per year.

We would like to invite interested individuals who have recently completed or will be completing a doctoral degree by December of this year, to go to the website page at: http://www.ahfmr.ab.ca/grants/lougheed.php to find out more about this unique opportunity. The deadline for applications to this special competition is November 15, 2008

Changes to the AHFMR Klein Prize

The Foundation has also made changes around the AHFMR Klein Prize for 2009. Originally structured like the AHFMR Lougheed Prize, the Klein Prize will now be awarded to an Alberta scientist, specifically, the top-ranked applicant in this year’s Scientist competition as recommended by our Scientific Advisory Council (SAC). The winner will be required to comply with the public communications portion of the 2009 Klein Prize, which will mean speaking engagements and media work within and outside Alberta of about one week’s duration during 2009.

The AHFMR Klein Prize is a $100,000 research prize ($75,000 for research and $25,000 for discretionary use) which also comes with an AHFMR-funded Post-doctoral Fellowship placement for up to three years with the Awardee. The total value of the Prize is approximately $250,000. It is named after Premier Ralph Klein under whose government the AHFMR Endowment was given a $500 million supplement in 2005. Additional information will be posted on the AHFMR web site soon about these changes.
