Independent Investigator September 2009 Competitions
Please note that for the September 15, 2009 competitions, AHFMR will only accept applications on behalf of the following Investigators:
- Investigators who are currently supported through an AHFMR Investigator Award (Clinical Investigator, Population Health Investigator, Scholar, Senior Scholar or Scientist) which expires on June 30, 2010.
- Investigators supported, at the time of the competition (September 15, 2009), on AHFMR Terminal Awards and who are eligible for a second application.
- Investigators who are not currently supported by AHFMR Investigator Awards (new Investigators) and who are deemed (by AHFMR) eligible to apply in the September 15, 2009 competitions.
For all these investigators, the normal application processes will be in place, including the absolute requirement to register for the competition by Friday, July 3, 2009.

The full Independent Investigator Application form for the September 2009 competition will be sent to eligible investigators who have registered for the competition.

AHFMR Master of Biotechnology (MBT) Studentship Pilot
AHFMR is piloting a studentship award for students interested in pursuing their MBT degree at the University of Calgary. Deadline for application for September 2009 admission to the MBT program is May 15, 2009. MBT program information is available on the University of Calgary website at http://www.biotech.ucalgary.ca/index.html. All admission inquiries should be directed to the MBT Program.

Please note that competition results will not be released by phone. The lists of the successful applicants will be sent to the universities the week of March 25. These lists will serve as the official decision of the Foundation should there be any discrepancy with the material on the web site.

HYRS
The Foundation is offering the tenth Heritage Youth Research Summer (HYRS) Program at the Universities of Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge. This six-week laboratory-based experience for top Grade 11 students includes a full roster of programming to introduce students to all areas of health research. - Notification of changes in the status of grant proposals from "pending" to "approved". These must be accompanied by formal evidence from the granting authorities including the amount of the approved award and the term of support.
- Notification of new appointments for the candidate (academic promotions, editorial boards, review committees, etc.). These must be accompanied by an institutional letter.
Supplemental information will be accepted until Monday, January 5, 2009. Information received after this date will not be forwarded to the committee for review.

Information workshops were presented on AHFMR's training programs at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary in early September. These workshops were well attended (approximately 197 individuals) and will be offered again in early 2009 in preparation for the March 2009 competitions.
Reminder: Interdisciplinary Team Grant Applications are due November 14, 2008
The Interdisciplinary Team Grants Advisory Committee will be meeting in Edmonton in early February 2009 to review the applications. The competition results are scheduled to be posted by the end of March.

A third competition is not anticipated at the present time. Any subsequent competitions will be pending the early evaluation of the teams funded in the first two competitions, the strategic priorities of the Foundation, and the availability of funds.

Report of Proceedings from Inukshuk II Conference now Available
The report of the proceedings of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research's (AHFMR) second Inukshuk conference, held November 11-14, 2007 in Banff, on the subject of The Brain, Mental Health, and Addiction: From Synapse to Society is now available on the AHFMR website at http://www.ahfmr.ab.ca/download.php/d20468c21ac08fcb8f4c7ee1d2b35ac0. The conference was a meeting of minds from all over the world-researchers in the field, policy-makers from the provincial and federal governments, and philanthropists. The resulting ideas represented the best thinking from the top minds in the field. The conference participants' discussion was catalyzed by questions intended to provoke, push, explore, and shape ideas to inform future health research and social policy. The report presents the important themes that resulted.

AHFMR is piloting a studentship award for students interested in pursuing their MBT degree at the University of Calgary. AHFMR Connects Career Explorer
Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch? On March 11 in Edmonton and March 13 in Calgary, close to 100 trainee level researchers enjoyed lunch and inspirational talks about career choices from a number of successful researchers at the first Connects Career Explorer events.

Feedback from attendees indicated a high interest in more opportunities to interact with AHFMR researchers at future such events. Thank you to our outstanding presenters for their time and interest in speaking to our trainee level health researchers.

Innovation Support

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING PHASE 1, 2, AND 3 INNOVATION (PROJECT) FUNDING

At their recent quarterly meeting, AHFMR's Board of Trustees decided to wind down the project funding (phase 1, 2, and 3) component of the Forefront Program. This decision was made in response to various reports, stakeholder interactions, and Trustee input regarding the ForeFront Program and its place at AHFMR and in Alberta's medical research community.

The final three deadlines are listed below:

NO NEW APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE OCTOBER 20 DEADLINE.

The career support and industry support components will be integrated into AHFMR's training portfolio. Tina Blake will continue to provide leadership in the further development of these programs in her new role as Acting Assistant Director of Grants and Awards.

In the fall AHFMR will host events in Edmonton and Calgary to celebrate the ForeFront program's contribution to Alberta's biotech and medical products sectors for the past 22 years. Dates will be confirmed and posted to the AHFMR website as soon as they are available.

The Internship Program supports the training of individuals with backgrounds in business and/or science in the medical products and biotechnology industries.

The training allowance per year remains at $5,000.

2. MBA Studentship Award:

A pilot award for 2007-2008, the MBA Studentship is designed to provide a science graduate with the opportunity to broaden his or her training and knowledge through enrolment in the University of Alberta's Master of Business Administration program with a specialization in technology commercialization.

The successful recipient of this award for 2008 is Dr. Stephanie Minnema.

3. MBT Studentship Award:

This award is also being piloted in the current fiscal year. One third of the successful ForeFront Interns since 2003 hold Master of Biomedical Technology (MBT) degrees from the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine. AHFMR created the MBT Studentship Award to capitalize on the natural fit between the training provided by the MBT Program and the objectives of the ForeFront Internship Program.

4. Industrial Researcher Award:

This pilot award provides salary support for an individual with an academic research background (Masters/PhD level) to gain industrial research experience in a company developing and commercializing medical/health-related products.

The successful recipient of this award for 2008 is Dr. Tara Lysechko, who is training at Virexx Medical Corp.

Industry Support

1. Partnership with BioAlberta:

Through this unique partnership, AHFMR will provide $150,000 to BioAlberta over three years. This funding will be used to strengthen and promote Alberta's bioindustry nationally and internationally through various BioAlberta initiatives, including organizing a successful showcase for emerging biotechnology companies at the Biotechnology International Organization's (BIO) International Convention. BioAlberta plays a lead role in coordinating the Alberta pavilion at BIO and will help prepare representatives from emerging companies for the convention.

The BIO International Convention is the world's largest biotechnology conference featuring expert speakers from the financial and business development communities, as well as presentations from cutting-edge biotechnology companies.

AHFMR recognizes that Alberta's universities are integral to the innovation system and the creation of the medical and health industries through research, technology transfer, and spin-off company creation.

AHFMR is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC): Dr. Aled Edwards - University of Toronto and Dr. Pamela Fink ? University of Washington. SAC's primary responsibilities include providing advice on strategic research matters and reviewing applications for AHFMR Scientist awards.

For the second year, AHFMR's technology commercialization program (ForeFront) is piloting an MBA Studentship Award in technology commercialization at the University of Alberta. This award will enable students with backgrounds in medical or health sciences to apply their knowledge to careers in management in the biotechnology, medical, or health industries.

September 2007 Independent Investigators - Release of Competition Results
Successful applicants will be recommended by AHFMR's peer review committees for approval by the Foundation's Board of Trustees in early March, 2008. The results from this competition will be posted on the Foundation's web site in mid- to late March 2008. The exact date will be provided in a future edition of the Notifier.

The deadline for submission of supplemental information is Friday, January 4, 2008. This information is limited to:
- Additional "accepted" publications to the list of publications. This must be accompanied by formal confirmation by the journal.
- Notification of changes in the status of grant proposals from "pending" to "approved". Please include the amount of the approved award and the term of support

We are pleased to introduce Carla Weyland, ForeFront Officer. A former WestLink Intern and TEC Edmonton JumpStart team member, Carla has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan and several years of experience in technology commercialization. Carla will be responsible for the delivery of the innovation funding (Phase 1, 2, and 3) and the Internship Program. Release of competition results ? September 2006 Independent Investigator Competition

The results from the September 2006 Independent Investigator competition (Clinical Investigators, Population Health Investigators, Scholars, Senior Scholars, Scientists, and Independent Establishment Grants) were posted on the AHFMR website on Friday, March 9.

The amount of funding for establishment grants, copies of reviews, etc. will be provided in the formal letters which will be sent the week of March 19. The information in the formal letters will serve as the official decision of the Foundation should there be any discrepancy with the material on the web site.

These will be made available on the AHFMR website not later than May 1. Please note that a number of changes have been made to the Foundation's investigator awards. Older versions of the guidelines and application forms should not be used.

AHFMR Interdisciplinary Team Grants April 2007 Competition

The Foundation received 82 registrations for the Letter of Intent (LOI) stage. In order to submit an LOI to the Interdisciplinary Team Grant program, you must have registered by February 15, 2007. The LOI submission deadline is April 13, 2007. If you have registered and now choose not to submit the LOI please let the Foundation know by e-mailing Tara McCarthy at tara.mccarthy@ahfmr.ab.ca.

Please note: The Foundation does not require the confirmed level of institutional support at the LOI stage. The description of the level of institutional support will be required in the full application only.

The Foundation will offer the eighth annual Heritage Youth Research Summer (HYRS) Program at the universities of Alberta, Calgary, and Lethbridge. This six-week laboratory-based experience for top Grade 11 students includes a full roster of programming to introduce students to all areas of health research. AHFMR provides support for its MD/PhD students and clinical fellows who will present abstracts at the RCPSC/CSCI Annual Meeting. This year the meeting will be held in Winnipeg on September 27-29 (see www.rcpsc.medical.org/meetings for additional information).

The Foundation will contribute toward expenses to a maximum of $1,000 for trainees residing in eastern Canada and the eastern United States, and to a maximum of $750 for trainees residing in western Canada and the western United States. The funding is to help with costs of travel, accommodation, and related expenses.

The Foundation must be notified in advance of the meeting if you are planning to attend and intend to submit a claim for expenses. This letter is to be co-signed by the supervisor and by the MD/PhD program director (for MD/PhD students).

Suggestions for Peer Review Committee Members

AHFMR will soon be selecting members for its peer review advisory committees for the 2007/2008 competitions for independent investigator awards. The Foundation welcomes suggestions for potential committee members. As a reminder, individuals for these committees originate from outside of Alberta. The Clinical Investigator, Population Health Investigator, Scholar and Senior Scholar committees have members selected from outside of Alberta but within Canada. The Scientific Advisory Council (reviews Scientist applications) and the Health Advisory Committee (reviews Health Scholar, Health Senior Scholar and Health Scientist applications) include senior investigators from Canada, the United States, and further abroad. The AHFMR Forefront Program continues to evolve to meet the needs of its stakeholders. We are moving ahead with our strategy to support knowledge application through technology commercialization in three areas: career support, industry support, and innovation support. Here is an update on some of our progress:

Career Support:

Internship Program:

The Internship Program supports the training of individuals with backgrounds in business and/or science in the medical products and biotechnology industries.

MBA Studentship Award:

Announced in 2006 as a pilot initiative, the MBA Studentship Award enables students with backgrounds in the medical/health/life sciences to apply their knowledge and pursue management careers in those industries. The award supports education and hands-on training in the University of Alberta's MBA program, specializing in technology commercialization.

Two candidates have been selected for the pilot.

Executive-in-Residence Awards:

The Executive-in-Residence Award enables the technology transfer offices to recruit senior-level management who have relevant industry experience and appropriate networks to assist university spin-off companies with the commercialization of technologies. The goal is to advance technologies and build better companies that will both improve health care and diversify and contribute to the economy.

Industrial Research Program:

The Industrial Research (IR) Program offers the opportunity for an individual with a background and education relevant to the interests of the AHFMR to get an introduction to a research career in industry where they will be participating in research and development projects focused on commercialization of medical and biotechnological innovations. Two awards will be piloted under this program:
- Industrial Researcher Award: supports full-time research careers in industry
- Summer Studentship Award: supports research training in industry during the summer months (deadline for application for eligible companies is March 1st, 2007)
These awards are being offered as a pilot in 2007 and will be evaluated at the end of the year to determine if they will be continued.

Innovation Support:

Block Grants:

Block Grants in the amount of $105,000 have been awarded to both TEC Edmonton and UTI. The technology transfer offices will use the funds to assess and strengthen the technical aspects of scientifically sound projects; verify uniqueness; and explore the potential for commercialization in real time. The objective is to accelerate the process of identifying, assessing, protecting, and commercializing medical and health innovations, and increase their chance of getting to market and improving health sooner. Funds will be administered by the tech transfer offices.

These awards are offered as a pilot and the outcomes will be evaluated at the end of 2007. During the pilot, ForeFront will continue to accept all Phase 1, 2, and 3 applications per our usual application process.
