AHFMR researcher garners cover story of British Medical Journal, one of the world's leading journals for physicians
(January 8, 2009, Edmonton) Ian Colman, PhD, an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Population Health Investigator and Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta's School of Public Health, is the lead author of the cover story of the January 24 edition of British Medical Journal (BMJ). A podcast of Colman discussing the study can be found at bmj.com
Colman and his colleagues examined the health and social problems of adults who had mild and severe behavioural problems as adolescents. The study followed more than 3,500 individuals taking part in the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development (the British 1946 birth cohort), over a 40-year period. All the participants were aged between 13 and 15 at the start of the study.
The results reveal significant new information about the societal impact of milder behavioural problems. The study notes that behavioural issues at school often lead to lifelong health, social and economic problems.
Colman will be available Friday, January 9, 2009 for interviews.
