Mar. 28, 2012

(Edmonton, Alberta) March 28, 2012…We are pleased to announce an innovative partnership that will sustain and strengthen Alberta’s capacity to support physician-led community based research.

The Research Ethics Review Committee (RERC) of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) will transfer to a new home at Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AIHS) effective April 16, 2012.

The transfer of the RERC is a result of a strategic planning process that the College Council concluded in 2011. One of the recommendations from the process was that physician-led community based research ethics review should be done by another organization. CPSA believes AIHS’s unique knowledge and experience of community based research and ethics review makes AIHS the appropriate home for the Research Ethics Review Committee. AIHS readily recognizes this as an excellent opportunity to build on its activity and has accepted all responsibilities associated with the transfer.

We will ensure all processes and systems required for successful physician-led community based research will be uninterrupted, particularly the protection of human research subjects. The RERC will continue to operate in compliance with the 2nd edition of the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2), Health Canada, and Health Information Act of Alberta requirements for the review of human health research. The ongoing review of studies already approved will be completed by the RERC in compliance with existing requirements. The name-Research Ethics Review Committee-will remain the same. The processes for application and review, and the current fee structure for ethics review will also remain the same.

Dr. Kirk Barber will remain Chair of the RERC and the two College staff members who support the RERC process—Jody Berube, Manager, RERC; and Marcia Escaravage, Administrative Assistant, RERC—will relocate to AIHS. They will report to Linda Barrett-Smith, Director, Ethics and Innovation Platforms. The only change will be a new address for the Research Ethics Review Committee:
