Research Ethics Boards (REBs) are independent in their ethics review decision making and are accountable to the highest level in the organizational body that established them. The organizations are accountable for the research conducted under their auspices.

Effective December 1, 2013, Alberta has the following three REBs designated under the Health Information Act to review and approve health research, each housed within a sponsoring organization.

  1. Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (University of Calgary)
  2. Health Research Ethics Board (University of Alberta)
  3. Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta (Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions)

The HREBA website includes a document for researchers regarding where to apply.
