Stipend Information for Fellowships and Studentships

The AIHS Board has approved changes to the stipends, research allowance and incentive awards for full-time students and fellows. Please note that the stipend changes outlined below will be effective October 1, 2011 and the research allowance will increase upon AIHS approved award renewal. These increases will apply to all new awards and to the existing awards.

Full-time Students: The stipend will increase from the current value of $20,000 per annum to $30,000 per annum.

The research allowance for full-time students will also be increased from $1,500 per annum to $2,000 per annum upon approved renewal of award.

Full-time Fellows: The stipend for all fellowships will increase to $50,000 per annum.

The research allowances for all fellowships will also be increased from $3,000 per year to $5,000 annually upon approved renewal of award.

Supplemental Income: Students and Fellows may receive up to 40% of the value of their awards from any single external agency. Supplemental income is NOT additive; as long as the value of any single award does not exceed 40% of their awards, students, fellows and clinical fellows may receive an unlimited number of awards. However, trainees must still ensure that no more than 200 hours per year are committed to non-research activities.

AIHS Incentive Award: This program awards students, fellows and clinical fellows a stipend supplement. If a trainee in any of the three categories receives another major, peer-reviewed award along with an AIHS award, he/she may be eligible to receive one of the following, whichever is the least:

  1. $12,000 (Students) or $15,000 (Fellows/Clinical Fellows) or;
  2. the maximum percentage allowable by the other agency.

The trainee will also receive the AIHS research allowance ($2,000 for studentships, $5,000 for fellowships).

Individuals who receive a traineeship in the form of an Incentive Award should note that this uses up their eligibility for support. Candidates have the option of canceling their awards in order to accept awards from another source. In such cases, AIHS may accept an application for the same type of award at a later date. Should an award by approved upon re-application, the period of support that the candidate may receive will depend on his/her eligibility, and will be up to the maximum support period allowed minus the period of support already used up.
