Results of the December 2010 and January 2011 Alberta Cancer Grant Programs

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AIHS) and the Alberta Cancer Foundation (ACF) are pleased to announce the results of the December 2010 Alberta Cancer Research Operating Grants, Alberta Cancer High Risk for High Return Grants and the January 2011 Alberta Cancer Bridge, Pilot and Limited Term Project Grants competitions.

The Alberta Cancer Grants Program provides opportunities for high-quality researchers who are actively involved in research that is directly related to the problem of cancer. Funds available in these competitions are to support either single or multiple investigators in one of the award categories below:

On behalf of their respective Boards, Dr. Jacques Magnan, AIHS CEO, and Darryl Diletzoy, ACF Acting CEO, congratulate the successful applicants and acknowledge and thank all applicants for their substantial efforts.

AIHS and ACF acknowledge and thank Alberta Health and Wellness for the Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy Fund to help support this program.

Applications

A total of 106 letters of intent were received to the Operating Grant and High Risk for High Returns competitions which resulted in 90 full applications being received in December 2010. In January 2011, 38 applications were received for the Alberta Cancer Bridge, Pilot and Limited Term Project Grants.

These represent a higher than normal application pressure.

Assessments and Decisions

The Alberta Cancer Research Operating Grants and the Alberta Cancer High Risk for High Returns Grants applications were assessed by the Alberta Cancer Grant Advisory Committees during meetings held on April18 to 21, 2011. The Alberta Cancer Bridge, Pilot and Limited Term Project Grants applications were assessed by the Alberta Bridge Pilot & Limited Term Grant Advisory Committee during a meeting held on February 28, 2011.

AIHS and ACF wish to acknowledge the substantial assistance provided by the Advisory Committee members and external reviewers and their important ongoing contributions to the missions of AIHS and ACF.

Formal letters of offer will be sent to the Principal Investigators which include information regarding funding and the specific terms and conditions under which the awards are offered. The letter will also contain reviewer comments about the individual’s application. The list of successful applicants is provided for information only. The formal letters will serve as the AIHS and ACF official decision should there be any discrepancy with the material on the website.

Results

For the December 2010 competition, there were 10 successful applications (15%) for the Alberta Cancer Research Operating Grants competition and 9 successful applications (41%) for the Alberta Cancer High Risk for High Returns Grants competition.

For the January 2011 competition, there were 8 successful applications (21%) for the Alberta Cancer Bridge, Pilot and Limited Term Project Grants competition.

The names of the successful applications are provided below.
