General Policies and Conditions for Training Awards

General Policies:

  • Non-Research Activities:
    With the approval of their faculty supervisors, trainees may undertake a maximum of 200 hours of non-research related activity per year in subjects relevant to the research project. This limit could include direct participation in:
    • teaching
    • preparation time
    • contributions to laboratory supervision
  • Parental Leave
  • Leaves of Absence
  • Healthcare Benefits

General Conditions:

  • Stipends are subject to the Income Tax Act and Regulations of the Government of Canada.

  • Expectations:
    All trainees are required to complete their training under the selected, sponsoring faculty advisor, and to adhere to the research project outlined in the application.

  • Change of Supervisor:
    The trainee must
    • have the agreement of a new supervisor who satisfies Alberta Innovates - Health conditions for supervisors
    • develop a new project
    • obtain prior approval from AIHS.

  • Changes to Research Program:
    Normally, the research project should not be substantially altered. If changes should become necessary, the trainee must obtain prior written approval from AIHS. Furthermore, the supervisor must agree with the proposed changes, and the original aims and conditions of the award must be satisfied.

    AIHS reserves the right to terminate support if its requirements are not met.

  • Termination of Support:
    The trainee and/or supervisor must immediately notify AIHS of any changes to the training status that could affect the Candidate's eligibility for an award. This includes termination of enrolment or of employment, completion of the requirements for the degree for students or leave of absence.

  • Vacations:
    Vacation entitlements are in accordance with the policies of the host institution and must be taken during the term of the award.

  • Final Report:
    The trainee and the supervisor must complete and submit the Final Report Form within one month of the termination or completion of an award.
