Terminal Awards

Current Heritage Investigators may receive terminal awards if they are unsuccessful in competitions for continued support from AHFMR.

Terminal awards:

  • are not automatic,
  • must be requested by the Dean of the relevant faculty, and
  • are contingent on:
    • a continuing appointment in a full-time position at the host institution
    • continuation of sufficient resources (grants or contracts) to maintain research activity, and
    • the prompt submission of progress reports for each calendar year of support.

If the terminal award is approved, the salary support will be at the rate prevailing during the year prior to the terminal year.

The length of terminal support varies according to the AHFMR award held and the length of time supported as an AHFMR Independent Investigator. Those individuals who have received unqualified personnel awards for less than 10 years may be sponsored for up to one year of terminal support. Those investigators who have received unqualified personnel awards for 10 or more years may be sponsored for up to two years of terminal support. For purposes of determining total number of years, a Terminal award or a Leave of Absence is considered a qualified award. Please note that some exceptions do exist and AHFMR should be consulted for confirmation of terminal support eligibility.

If an investigator accepts a terminal award, AHFMR may modify the term of a subsequent successful application. The host institution and the candidate will have the option of EITHER decreasing the term of a future terminal award by a period of time equal to that of the terminal support taken OR reducing the term of the new award by the same length of time. The latter option would reinstate the investigator's eligibility for full terminal support in the future.
