| Sabbatical Leave for Personnel (applicable for Transition Awardees only) |
AHFMR will consider applications for sabbatical leaves (continuation of contribution to salary support ) for AHFMR investigators according to standard University policy. Before taking a sabbatical, investigators must submit an application to AHFMR outlining the purpose of the leave. In addition, the investigator's host institution must support the leave.
The location of, and the activities planned during, the leave must be relevant to and significantly further the research for which the investigator received his/her AHFMR award.
The Foundation's support of sabbatical leave will depend on:
- the agreed upon contribution to salary and benefits;
- the regulations of the investigator's institution, and;
- formal confirmation of institutional approval.
The request for the sabbatical leave grant must be received by the Foundation at least 2 months prior to the commencement of the investigator's sabbatical leave. The request for a sabbatical leave grant should confirm the details of the sabbatical leave and include the following information:
- sabbatical leave dates and host institution;
- budget details and justification of the need for a travel allowance, and;
- budget details and justification of the need for a research allowance.
This request should be submitted in letter form and provide sufficient information to evaluate the need for assistance with research and travel costs.
No requests for sabbatical leave support will be considered if received past the start date of the sabbatical leave.
Travel Allowance:
AHFMR may provide a travel grant to the awardee to help defray the costs of travel to and from the host institution. The amount of travel assistance awarded is dependent upon the need for assistance as justified by the investigator. This amount will not exceed the equivalent of (1) one return economy airfare and associated ground transportation costs.
The cost of travel for dependents remains the investigator's responsibility.
Research Allowance:
AHFMR may provide a research allowance of up to $5,000 per annum to assist with expenses incurred in the host laboratory. The research allowance will only be provided if the investigator does not remain in his/her regular research setting. The amount of research allowance granted is dependent upon the need for assistance as justified by the investigator.
| Leaves of Absence for Trainees |
Leaves of absence of up to 6 months may be granted following an application to AHFMR outlining the purpose of the leave. The support of the host institution is required. Upon the trainee's return, AHFMR will extend the award by the duration of the approved leave.
Personnel:
- AHFMR investigators are employees of their host institutions; therefore, parental leave arrangements are dependent on institutional regulations.
Trainees:
- All AHFMR full-time Studentship and Fellowship awardees may receive up to 20 weeks of paid maternity leave.
- Paid parental leave may be awarded to an AHFMR Studentship or Fellowship recipient when the mother works. The duration of such a leave will be up to 20 weeks, less any period of maternity leave taken by the mother.
- Following the parental leave, and upon the request of the trainee, the term of the AHFMR training award may be extended by an amount of time equal to the duration of the leave.
