Visiting Professorships

Visiting Professorships are awarded to internationally recognized individuals with distinguished careers. It is expected that the award will both contribute to the education and training of students and fellows and promote the progress of medical or health research in Alberta.

Visiting Professorships may also be awarded in order to assist the Alberta-based universities in planning or initiating new research directions, or for the purpose of evaluating AIHS-funded programs.

The sponsors should make every effort to ensure that visits to more than one Alberta centre are included in the proposed itinerary.

Please note the following additional points:

  • The length of the visit is expected to be no longer than seven days.
  • It is expected that the host institution will contribute to the cost of the visit
  • Awards may be used for the following purposes:
    • an honorarium for the Visiting Professor
    • a per diem for the Professor's expenses
    • travel costs
  • Applications should be submitted directly to AIHS at least three months prior to the proposed visit.

Visiting Scientists

Application deadline for the 2014 Visiting Scientist Competition: Monday, March 3, 2014 at 4:00 pm.

The Visiting Scientist program is intended to:

  1. Bring productive scientists having expertise not currently available in provincial institutions to Alberta. This expertise may consist of:
    • special knowledge,
    • new approaches to research, and
    • the management of new technology.

  2. Allow Alberta-based institutions to sponsor Alberta scientists:
    • to visit major medical or health research centres, and
    • to acquire knowledge about new research concepts or technology.

    • The visit must result in:
      • important contributions to medical or health related science in Alberta, and
      • an increase in the visitor's research productivity.

The sponsoring institution must assure the return of the Alberta scientist to his/her regular position upon completion of the award.

  • Eligibility:
    1. Visiting Scientists TO Alberta -- The sponsoring institution must identify the candidate's special expertise, as well as the expected long-term research benefits of the visit.

Applications demonstrating that arrangements have been made for the visitor to meet with scientists in other Alberta universities or institutions, will receive preference.

    2. Visiting Scientists FROM Alberta -- The sponsoring institution must identify the candidate's special expertise, as well as the expected long-term research benefits of the visit.

Please note: AIHS Independent Investigator Award holders are not eligible to apply for Visiting Scientist support.

  • Length of visit: 1 month (minimum) to 12 months (maximum).

  • Use of funds:
    1. Visiting Scientists TO Alberta may receive travel assistance which could include living expenses and economy airfare. In addition, should the visit result in loss of income, AIHS may consider providing financial assistance. The host laboratory may apply for a research allowance to cover some of the costs of materials, supplies, and expendables required for participation in the research program.

    2. Visiting Scientists FROM Alberta may receive travel assistance which could include living expenses and economy airfare. In addition, should the visit result in loss of income, AIHS may consider providing financial assistance. • Applications should be submitted on up-to-date application forms.

  • The host may apply for a maximum of two renewals. If productive, collaborative research ventures arise as a result of the visit. Such renewals must be undertaken within a two-year period.
