Health Research Studentship
M.D./Ph.D. Studentship
-
Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions (AIHS) Full-time Studentships enable academically superior students to undertake full-time research training in the basic biomedical sciences or in clinical research. The award consists of a stipend and a research allowance.
-
Candidates must have been accepted into, or be currently engaged in, a full-time, thesis-based, graduate program at an Alberta-based university in a health-related discipline leading to a Master's or doctoral degree. This award is not available to students registered in a course-based program. Normally, support will not be provided beyond 6 years of enrollment in graduate school.
Candidates who have interrupted their training for parenting or other reasons and who have consequently exceeded this time limit, may apply for studentship support. In such cases, however, the candidate is advised to clearly explain the nature of his/her particular circumstances at the time of application.
-
5 years, maximum; 3 years, maximum at the Master's level.
-
The award may be implemented at any time within 6 months from the date of offer.
-
Full-time studentship awards are tenable only at an Alberta-based university.
-
A faculty supervisor possessing both a record of productive health-oriented research and sufficient resources to ensure the satisfactory conduct of the research must sponsor the candidate. He/she must provide direct supervision and should not supervise more than four full-time AIHS-supported trainees.
-
Studentship awards will consist of a stipend and a research allowance.
The research allowance will be administered by the University with the expectation that the supervisor will approve any expenses made to the allowance. Approved uses of the research allowance include:
- the purchase of scientific materials, supplies and expendables,
- the purchase of minor equipment (note: the policies of the host institution with respect to ownership of equipment will apply to equipment bought with these funds),
- computer software programs,
- costs for the use of libraries, or computers,
- costs associated with the publication of research results,
- travel expenses to attend scientific meetings,
- purchase of books, periodicals and journals.
If the award is terminated prematurely, unused funds must be returned to AIHS. The research allowance cannot be used for salary support.
See also: Supplemental Income and AIHS Incentive Award.
-
Studentship awards are normally provided for an initial period of 24 months and are renewable (upon submission of annual progress reports that are satisfactory to AIHS) to a maximum total period of support of 5 years.

Full-time Health Research Studentship awards are normally tenable at an Alberta university. AIHS will consider requests for training outside of Alberta from Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have demonstrated superior academic performance, and who can justify their selection of training environment outside of Alberta.
Candidates for out-of-province awards must also have the strong support of an official at an Alberta-based institution (e.g. Dean at a university, CEO of a hospital, or Medical Officer of Health) as demonstrated by an interest in the candidate's future re-recruitment to the province.

-
Full-Time M.D./Ph.D. Studentships are intended to provide an opportunity for exceptional candidates, who wish to pursue careers as Clinical Investigators, to study for the M.D. and the Ph.D. degrees simultaneously. AIHS support is complementary to the formal M.D./Ph.D. programs at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.
-
Applicants are limited to those students that formally enter the MD-PhD program not later than the start of their second year of PhD studies at either the University of Alberta or the University of Calgary. AIHS's offer of support is contingent on the granting of complementary stipend support from the Faculty of not less than 15% of the value of the AIHS award, for the duration of the award. Furthermore, it is expected that the universities will undertake to provide administrative support to the offices of the coordinators of the M.D./Ph.D. programs.
-
6 years, maximum.

Up to two years of support may be applied toward the regular medical school program. Normally this would follow the successful completion of at least the first year of formal Ph.D. research and study and, in normal circumstances, the completion of at least the first year of formal medical school study. AIHS may consider different arrangements provided that a study and funding plan is provided at the time of implementation of the award.
