The Alberta Foundation for Health Research

Research is a major contributor to improving health and Albertans are fortunate to live in a province that has made health research a priority. Many people who have felt the impact of a certain disease or health condition in their family want to support ongoing research in health. In response to numerous inquiries about how to donate to AHFMR-supported health research, a separate foundation was created.

Building on the AHFMR investment

The Alberta Foundation for Health Research (AFHR), founded in 1994, is a non-profit, charitable organization that receives donations for health research projects. Only selected, top-quality health research projects are supported by AFHR, according to the standards of excellence set by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.

University of Alberta researcher Dr. Bill Colmers has received funding from the Alberta Foundation for Health Research for his work on obesity.

Donating to health research

The AFHR does not accept directed donations but works with donors to channel funding to high-quality research projects of importance to the health of Albertans. Project possibilities that could be funded by AFHR often arise in the following areas:

  • Heart and stroke
  • Lung diseases
  • Cancer
  • Genetics
  • Joint injury
  • Neuroscience
  • Immunology and virology
  • Diabetes
  • Population health
  • Mental health
  • Health services
  • Seniors' health
