Abby Garfunkel
Kurimoto Japanese Garden, Devon

Abby Garfunkel

Biotechnology can be a hectic, stressful business. So having a complete change of scenery occasionally is important to Abby Garfunkel, who recently launched a career in biotech. "The Kurimoto Japanese Garden is a peaceful, tranquil place. The atmosphere is so different from everyday life-that's why I love it."

Originally from Edmonton, Abby now calls Calgary home. She has been working at SemBioSys Genetics Inc. since graduating from the Master in Biomedical Technology (MBT) program at the University of Calgary. Abby is a business-development intern in AHFMR's ForeFront Internship program, which trains young scientists and entrepreneurs in technology commercialization at Alberta biotech companies.

"This is a unique position where I can use my science background and be exposed to business. The internship is all about learning: at SemBioSys I'm learning something new every day. It is the ideal transition from studies at school to the biotech industry. As an undergraduate, I never really thought about the business side of science. The MBT was my introduction, and my interest was piqued. Now, with the internship, I'm finding that this is the career for me."
