Jerahmeel Mejia The Hoodoos, Drumheller
As Jerahmeel Mejia begins another chapter in his education—university, in another province—he's thinking a lot about the future. Despite his forward focus, one of his favourite places in Alberta is linked closely with the past. "Alberta is such a booming province-everything is so new. Drumheller is so different. I like the idea of a place that's a reminder of what was here before." Jerahmeel is now a first-year student in science at the University of British Columbia. His decision to go into science was influenced by his work experience in the summer between grades 11 and 12. He participated in AHFMR's Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) program and spent six weeks in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Light, an AHFMR Senior Scholar at the University of Alberta. Dr. Light's research team studies how cells malfunction in heart disease and diabetes. "It was my first experience in a lab. I was really sad when it was over. The equipment was very high-tech, and it was great to learn how to operate some of it. The other fun part was working on the research questions. It was cool every time we got an answer." |
