Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program
2007 Competition Results
The response to the eighth offering of the Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) Program was excellent with 150 applications from 73 schools throughout the province. We are especially grateful to all teachers who were references for the students. We truly appreciate your efforts and look forward to meeting you at the HYRS Finale or the Teachers' Workshops later on in the summer (invitations will be sent to all refereeing teachers). On May 28 the HYRS adjudication committee members - all teachers, from Sherwood Park, Lethbridge, Spruce Grove, Calgary, and Edmonton - met to select the 48 applicants for HYRS 2007. Twenty HYRS positions are at the University of Alberta, 23 are at the University of Calgary as the Hotchkiss Brain Institute is funding three positions, and five students are at the University of Lethbridge. The HYRS participants come from 46 high schools in total. Four criteria helped them with their selection:
- applicants had to have taken required math and science subjects and have achieved at least an 85% average
- two teacher references
- an external reference from someone in their community
- a well thought-out essay that answered the essay questions clearly, compellingly and creatively.
The Grade 11 students will be returning to their high school in the fall and will be on-site ambassadors for the program for other students in their school, thus fulfilling one of the main goals of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research in developing the HYRS Program. Another guideline for the HYRS adjudication committee was to select a proportional representation of rural and urban participants to reflect the overall submissions. Eleven students are from schools outside Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge.
