Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program
2002 Competition Results
Response to the third year of the Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) Program was excellent with submissions from 170 applicants, representing 96 schools throughout the province. We are especially grateful to all teachers who were references for the students. We truly appreciate your efforts and look forward to meeting you at Teachers' Day later on in the summer (invitations will be sent to all refereeing teachers).
On May 27 the five HYRS adjudication committee members, made up of two science teachers in Edmonton public school system, a science teacher from Red Deer's separate school system, and the two HYRS Managers, met to select the 45 applicants for HYRS 2001. Twenty HYRS positions are at the University of Alberta, 20 are at the University of Calgary, and five students are at the University of Lethbridge. The HYRS particpants come from 39 high schools in total.
Four criteria helped them with their selection:
- applicants had to have taken required math and science subjects and have achieved at least an 85% average
- two teacher references
- an external reference from someone in their community
- a well thought-out essay that answered the essay questions clearly, compellingly and creatively.
The Grade 11 students are returning to their high school in the fall and will be on-site ambassadors for the program for other students in their school, thus fulfilling one of the main goals of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research in developing the HYRS Program. Another guideline for the HYRS adjudication committee was to have proportional representation of rural and urban kids to reflect the overall submissions.
Twenty-one students are from schools outside Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge. The following students are the HYRS participants for Summer 2002:
