Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program

2001 Competition Results

Once again, the response to the HYRS program was excellent with 154 applications from throughout the province. We are especially grateful to all teachers who were references for the students. We truly appreciate your efforts and hope we can count on you in the future.

On May 29 the five HYRS adjudication committee members, made up of two science teachers in Edmonton public school system, a science teacher from Calgary's separate school system, and the two HYRS Managers, met to select the 42 applicants for HYRS 2001. Twenty HYRS positions are with AHFMR and other researchers at the University of Alberta, 20 are with Heritage and other researchers at the University of Calgary, and two students are with Heritage researchers at the University of Lethbridge.

Four criteria helped them with their selection:

  1. applicants had to have taken required math and science subjects and have achieved at least an 85% average
  2. two teacher references
  3. an external reference from someone in their community
  4. a well thought-out essay that answered the essay questions clearly, compellingly and creatively.

The Grade 11 students are returning to their high school in the fall and will be on-site ambassadors for the program for other students in their school, thus fulfilling one of the main goals of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research in developing the HYRS Program. Another guideline for the HYRS adjudication committee was to have proportional representation of rural and urban kids to reflect the overall submissions.

We are delighted to report 15 boys and 27 girls were selected. Seventeen students are from schools outside Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge. The following students are the HYRS participants for Summer 2001:

Congratulations to all the successful HYRS participants for this first year of the program! Thanks to all the applicants who made the selection such a difficult process as the overall quality was overwhelmingly high.

The HYRS Program on all three campuses offers more than just lab experience. Guest lecturers, tours, biosafety workshops, poster sessions, an open house, field trips and a Teachers Day will round out the program. Keep checking this site throughout the summer to see the progression of the HYRS 2001 Program.
